If you have kids fighting over precious bathroom time in the morning, read on for five steps to set up a functional “get-ready space” in their bedrooms.
Always start by mapping out a potential spot in their room and measure up your available space. Will they sit or stand when using the space? Check the width, height and depth you have to work with, accounting for any skirting boards, window frames, heating/cooling vents and light switches. You want a piece of furniture that has enough surface area for self-care and grooming activities and also something with some built-in storage. You may be able to steal some surface space from an existing desk or bedside table, or even on top of a set of drawers. Don’t forget to consider where power points are if you plan to plug in a hair dryer, hair styling tool or clippers!
Think about their age and preferences now AND into the future. How can the space adapt over time? What do they need now VS. once they hit puberty? Think skincare, haircare, grooming, make-up, and jewellery. When buying pieces to set up the space, make it age-appropriate but consider how it will be able to mature over time (think colours, style of furniture and using accessories that can be changed-up easily).
Make a list of all the accessories you will need to buy – a mirror, little storage baskets, drawers… Kmart have some great clear modular storage options that help you see everything within! Also consider including a small bin for convenience and even a caddy of all the things they will need when they can finally steal some shower time!
Ensure adequate lighting. Natural light is ideal, but if not available, opt for bright overhead or task lighting. Consider adding a table lamp or wall-mounted lights near the space for additional illumination. In particular, if doing make-up is priority number one, then lighting is also priority number one.
Personalise it! Decorate the area with your child’s favourite colours, photos, posters, or artwork to make it inviting and personalised. Maybe a @growme board? Keep the space clutter-free and organised to facilitate smooth morning routines. Encourage the child to take ownership of the space by involving them in its setup and maintenance.
Ready to transform your family’s morning routine? Start by implementing these steps to create a personalised and efficient get ready space in their bedroom. Get creative, involve your child, and watch as your mornings become smoother and more enjoyable!
