*CURRENT PROJECT*
This project involved supporting a couple as they moved from a long-term rental into their first owned apartment. After more than ten years of renting, they were looking forward to creating a home that felt intentional, cohesive, and easier to live in, but they were also carrying forward some very real challenges from their previous space.
Their existing home had issues with mould and insects, which meant they needed to be selective about what they brought with them. They also described their space as difficult to relax in, with a constant sense of unfinished tasks and clutter, and found it physically challenging to clean due to limited storage and the impact of chronic fatigue.
They identified neurodiversity, disability, and sensory sensitivities as relevant factors, which shaped how I approached the project. One of the clients is also colour blind, which meant decisions around colour and finishes needed to be clearly explained and supported so they felt confident in what was being chosen.
The work focused on creating a home that felt easier to maintain, more calming to be in, and more reflective of their preferences. This included selecting flooring that supported sensory comfort, with a move toward timber rather than carpet, and designing lighting that was practical and adjustable, using layered and diffused sources rather than relying on harsh overhead lighting.
Storage was approached carefully, balancing the need for visibility with the need to reduce visual overwhelm. We worked toward systems that made items easy to access and put away, without contributing to the feeling of clutter.
Given the complexity of needs, I adapted how information was shared throughout the project. This included a combination of in-person meetings, verbal discussions, and written summaries, as well as using tools like Trello to help sequence decisions and reduce cognitive load.
This project highlights how deeply the experience of a home is shaped by how easy it is to use, maintain, and understand. By focusing on function first and tailoring the process to the clients’ needs, we were able to create a space that feels more supportive and sustainable over time.
